Open Wingwait, allow location, and the map centres on your sky with every aircraft overhead moving in real time. Tap the one you heard: you'll get the airline and aircraft type in plain English — "Emirates Boeing 777 flying from Dubai to Manchester" — plus its route, altitude, speed, a photo of the actual airframe, and how long until it lands.

Reading your sky

Planes are coloured by altitude — warm amber low down, sky blue at cruise — so a glance tells you whether that rumble was a departure climbing out or something seven miles up. Helicopters get a rotor symbol, light aircraft a small straight-wing one, and jumbo jets render bigger. The chips under the search box filter to airliners, light aircraft, helicopters or military.
